Project Background

The original architects contacted Powrmatic to study the possibility of finding a packaged air conditioning/heat pump solution for the current construction high rise, known as the Hub, which was being erected on the south side of the Gibraltar International Airport.  Given local planning restrictions and protecting the building facade, they could not use traditional split systems, where external condensers would have been visible. The Hub design team had 143 Studio apartments, of similar internal area, to condition and successfully trialled, then selected the Powrmatic Vision model 3.1 DW, Inverter Air Conditioner/Heat Pump, to provide low-cost cooling in the summer and heating in the winter.

Project Solution

Powrmatic also offered unique external bespoke anti-rain cowls to prevent the local Levante wind, converting rainstorms from vertical to horizontal torrents from entering the supply and discharge ducts. Only two contractors were used for the installation, as the unit requires minimal installation skills. The electrical contractor supplied a 13 amp BS socket within 1 metre of the location, as the unit, which is pre-plugged with a 13 amp BS plug, does not need to be hard-wired. Before the final installation, the mechanical contractor used the supplied wall template to pre-drill two x160 mm duct holes and the 18 mm drain outlet hole and fit the external rain cowls. Then upon final structural completion, and when the furniture was being installed, the Vision was mounted on the external wall, powered and commissioned in its chosen position.

Project Result

The final air conditioning/heat pump solution, facilitated by the Vision, now provides full automatic cool and heat 24/7, in a very challenging climate, while maintaining the building integrity and the aesthetic while complying with the current legislative planning laws that were in place. The units are all fully controlled by onboard, remote and WIFI control, allowing the client to preset his requirements remotely if required before arrival in his apartment, hold his internal temperature and reduce his energy consumption at the same time. For more details Contact Powrmatic AC product manager, Paul Greenough at paulgreenough@powrmatic.co.uk
