Energy From Waste Ventilation - NESS Energy Project

Energy From Waste Ventilation

Ness Energy in Aberdeen is an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility processing 150,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, converting it into electricity for the national grid. With a footprint approximately of 2,500m² The plant meets stringent European emission standards and required a robust smoke ventilation system due to the potential fire risk. Powrmatic provided a solution with Ultrasky and Multisky products to ensure both smoke and natural ventilation.

Project Background

Ness Energy is a significant step forward in sustainable waste management and energy production for North East Scotland. The plant processes non-recyclable waste from Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray Councils and will produce electricity for the national grid, and heat for a district heating network. Given the nature of the EfW operations, which involve high temperatures and potential fire risks, a reliable smoke ventilation system was essential. The goal was to protect the building and ensure compliance with rigorous fire safety and environmental standards.

Project Solution

Powrmatic provided a comprehensive ventilation solution tailored to the specific needs of the 2,500m² Ness Energy facility. The Ultrasky Twinflaps were chosen for their effective smoke ventilation capabilities. Eight of these units were installed to ensure rapid extraction of smoke during a fire, enhancing safety and aligning with fire safety regulations.

Additionally, thirteen Multisky ventilators were installed, selected for their dual-functionality. These units not only facilitate natural ventilation by extracting high internal temperatures and steam but also integrate with the OpenSky product, which serves as a smoke ventilator. This combination ensures that the Multisky units provide both natural and smoke ventilation through a single installation. The Ultrasky units were installed on the bunker area and the Multisky units in the Reception Hall, delivering expert smoke control and efficient ventilation throughout the facility.

Project Result

The installation of Powrmatic’s Ultrasky and Multisky products has brought substantial benefits to the Ness Energy facility. The advanced smoke ventilation system ensures prompt and effective smoke extraction, which is vital for safety in the event of a fire and helps minimise potential damage. This system guarantees compliance with stringent European emission and fire safety standards.

The Multisky ventilators, with their natural ventilation capabilities, help maintain optimal internal temperatures, thereby improving the working environment and reducing the need for additional cooling systems. The effective integration of these systems ensures that the facility operates both safely and efficiently, supporting its objectives of sustainability and energy production.
