Hybrid Air Rotation & Heat Pump Climate Control – Powrmatic Warehouse

Hybrid Air Rotation System

Powrmatic has successfully designed and installed its pioneering AirRoteX-H Hybrid Heat Pump Air Rotation Unit at its own warehouse facility in Somerset. The project was undertaken to demonstrate how hybrid HVAC technology can transform heating performance in large industrial spaces while supporting decarbonisation goals and improving operational efficiency. Installed within Powrmatic’s 50m x 50m x 8m warehouse, the system provides consistent environmental control across the entire building envelope. The project serves as a live demonstration site, enabling consultants, contractors and end users to see the technology performing in real-world conditions.

  • “This installation has given us complete confidence in the performance of hybrid air rotation technology. We’re achieving consistent temperature control across the warehouse while improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon impact. Seeing the system operate daily within our own facility demonstrates exactly what’s possible for large industrial spaces”

Project Background

Powrmatic identified an opportunity to develop a hybrid climate control system that blends its trusted air rotation technology — proven over 40 years — with advanced air source heat pump (ASHP) capability. The aim was to test this innovation in a real-world setting at their own warehouse, proving performance, efficiency, and sustainability for large-scale commercial spaces. Warehouses and distribution facilities pose unique decarbonisation challenges due to their size, high heat loss, and traditionally energy-intensive HVAC requirements. By piloting the AirRoteX-H Hybrid Heat Pump Air Rotation Unit, Powrmatic wanted to demonstrate that a hybrid solution can deliver reliable climate control while achieving better energy outcomes than conventional systems.

Project Solution

The installed AirRoteX-H system integrates a 90kW gas burner, two 75kW internal coils and a 150kW external air source heat pump. The hybrid configuration allows the system to intelligently balance energy sources depending on demand and ambient conditions, ensuring optimal performance at all times. Powrmatic’s air rotation technology plays a crucial role in distributing conditioned air evenly throughout the 8-metre-high space, eliminating stratification and maintaining stable internal temperatures between +18°C and -5°C design parameters. By combining renewable heat pump technology with the proven effectiveness of gas-fired support, the system provides both efficiency and operational flexibility. The result is a climate control solution that reduces energy consumption, improves comfort levels and enhances sustainability without compromising performance.

Project Result

The installation has successfully demonstrated that hybrid air rotation systems can deliver consistent, efficient heating across large commercial and industrial buildings. Temperature stability across the warehouse has improved significantly, while the integration of air source heat pump technology has reduced overall reliance on gas-only heating. The project now operates as a live reference site, allowing visitors to see the AirRoteX-H system in action. It provides measurable proof that hybrid HVAC solutions offer a practical pathway toward lower-carbon warehouse heating, supporting businesses as they transition to more sustainable operations.
