B&M Ellesmere Port Link 674 Distribution Centre Frost Protection

Distribution Centre Frost Protection Solution

The B&M Distribution Centre at Ellesmere Port, known as Link 674, is a landmark logistics development and one of the largest speculative warehouses ever built in the North West. The 1.2 million sq. ft building, with an internal volume exceeding one million cubic metres, stands 18 metres high and includes 85 loading docks to support B&M’s growing national distribution network. Powrmatic was selected to design and supply a comprehensive frost protection heating system for the facility. The system included two 375kW TE Air Rotation Heaters and four Destratification Units, providing frost protection for the internal sprinkler system.

Project Background

As the largest spec-built warehouse in the North West and one of the most significant logistics transactions in the UK, advised by Savills, Link 674 represents a major step forward in modern distribution design. Cain secured the lease agreement of the new Imports Centre which allows B&M to streamline inbound shipping container flows and optimise capacity across its five existing distribution centres, helping to serve millions of customers across the country. Beyond operational efficiency, the development brings new employment and training opportunities to Ellesmere Port and the wider Merseyside region. Given the building’s exceptional size and 18-metre-high racking,  the buidling required a frost protection system. A powerful, tailored air rotation solution was required to ensure full frost protection for the sprinkler system throughout the entire volume should temperatures critical levels.

Project Solution

Powrmatic designed a bespoke full frost protection scheme in collaboration with Allangate Mechanical Services Limited, a respected UK building services contractor with over 30 years of experience. This project, delivered for CLP Group FS Ltd — a leading UK facilities services provider — marked Allangate’s first TE Air Rotation installation with Powrmatic. The system was tailored to meet CLP’s operational requirements, ensuring reliable frost protection performance and energy efficiency across their facility.  The system featured two 375kW TE Air Rotation Heaters, each standing eight metres tall, to circulate and distribute warm air evenly throughout the facility should temperatures reach critical levels. Four Destratification Units were also installed to assist with the air movement stragtically designed within the space to turnover large volumes of air at low velocity. The Powrmatic Air Rotation system was specifically designed for large-scale, high-bay environments, providing reliable frost protection.

Project Result

The completed system provides full frost protection across the entire one-million-cubic-metre warehouse. Powrmatic’s TE Air Rotation and Destratification units operate to maintain air movement throughout the space, activating only when temperatures approach freezing. This ensures a stable environment that prevents frost formation and protects the building’s sprinkler system from freezing. The Ellesmere Port Imports Centre now plays a key role in enhancing B&M’s national supply chain, improving efficiency and supporting sustainable growth. The project highlights Powrmatic’s capability to design and deliver large-scale frost protection air movement systems and showcases Allangate’s expertise in mechanical installation.
